I think its the cutest thing
I have an aussie shep = )HOW DO YOU TEACH YOUR DOG to play dead after shooting him with your finger?
1) Teach your dog to play dead when you say 'play dead'. First have him lay down. Then push him to his side and say 'PLAY DEAD!' You'll have to repeat this over and over until your dog has fully learned this trick.
2) Before saying play dead say 'BANG' and make a gun with your fingers and then say PLAY DEAD. Do this over and over again and after a while your dog will associate that he should play dead after hearing BANG and seeing the 'gun'.
3) Now, stop saying PLAY DEAD altogether and just say BANG and make the gun sign.
4) After your dog has mastered #3, now you can eliminate saying BANG altogether if you'd like and just do the gun sign with your hand.
We prefer saying BANG and the gun sign. My dog is a pro at it now. Good luck! :) As with any training, you have to REPEAT it over and over again and still do refreshers every now and then.
PS We're now trying to teach him to play dead on his back, with his legs up in the air, this has been a challenge. I actually wish we had started OUT that way.HOW DO YOU TEACH YOUR DOG to play dead after shooting him with your finger?
lol my mom trained my dog to do that.. now he bites my @ss when I run.. I don't know, maybe you should do it enough times and maybe give em a nudge to fall over and they will maybe learn to be able to do it on signal.
Alot of hard work and patience.........thats all I can offer!!
If you find a proven method, let me know, I would love to see my Boxer do it also!!
Basically, start by luring him into position with a treat. Do this over and over. Lure him and then give him a treat. You'll know he understands when he comes up to you and just lies down because he wants a treat. Once he gets the idea, say ';Bang!'; and point your finger. If he does it, give him a treat. If not, go back to working on getting him to go into that position.

I was able to teach my dog that trick :) She first knew the regular ';down';. So I would put her into a regular down first, then lay her flat with one hand and at the same time say ';bang!'; and point my finger at her. I just did this over and over again and gave her a treat once she was flat and still. She eventually learned that bang + finger meant to lay flat. If your dog knows stay you can also get them to stay dead until you want them to come alive again!
I have a German Shepherd and this is one of the tricks I've taught her. I use my finger pointed at her like a gun and the command ';BANG!';
This is one of those commands that needs to be broken down into little steps to be taught effectively. The first step you need to teach is for your dog to go from a ';down'; position to laying on her side.
Place her in a ';down'; in front of you, then hold a treat in front of her nose for her head to follow, and moving it sideways until she rolls onto her side. (You can also use your hand or toes to gently push her over if she won't roll over on her own.) As soon as she's on her side, mark the behavior (with a clicker or marker word, such as ';right';), then give her the treat.
The reason you want to do this with a treat is that you're essentially using the treat to teach her the hand signal to roll onto her side. Keep repeating with the treat until the hand motion gets you a consistent rolling to the side each time.
Now you will want to introduce a word for this, such as ';dead'; or ';bang';. Say the word while giving the hand signal at the same time, then mark the behavior and give her the treat. Repeat until you can use just the word without the hand signal.
Now do this with your dog in a standing position in front of you. Give the command - ';BANG'; (or ';dead'; or whatever) accompanied by the hand signal you used for rolling over. Your dog knows the action, so she should lay down and roll onto her side.
If she does NOT go down and roll over, first tell her ';wrong'; (this is what I use to let me dog know the behavior she gave me is not what I asked for), then give the command followed by your hand signal for ';down'; and then the hand signal for rolling onto her side. Once she does it, mark the behavior and reward her. Repeat until she will do it on cue from a standing position.
Last, introduce the ';gun'; hand signal. Point your finger at her like it's a gun while giving the voice command she already knows. Reward and praise when she does it.
You may always want to do the hand signal and voice command for this one together instead of going to voice only or signal only (used separately) for the effect.
i just tought my dog this trick.. it helps if they know stay first .. and a hand movement to go with it.. thats what i did and hes a pro he will play dead until i say good boy!!and if he doesnt have the half roll over down use a treat and put it behind his ear and he will roll ... just keep useing the word bang over nd over and he will have it in no time... good luck
