For your dog to come to you, the reward needs to be greater than the reward she is getting by not coming to you. She probably believes you will take the toy away and play time will end. Make sure your dog understands ';Come'; and have a potent reward ready (for most dogs this is some sort of food) to give when she does come. Your dog should follow commands under all circumstances anyway, so this is a good lesson. You can try using a 20 foot lead to start out with and just throw the ball as far as the lead will reach, have her retrieve it, then call her back to you. If she knows come and doesnt' listen, then give her a pop to the collar with the lead and get her attention back to you. If she doesn't listen, the pop needs to be harder. Give her the treat when she comes to you as a reward and as an incentive to spit the toy out. Praise a lot and immediately throw the toy again. Try to never end the game this way because she will learn that if she brings it back, the games stops and you are back at square one. End the game by doing something different from what you would do during the game. Let her hold the toy and pet her telling her how good she is and then give her lots of treats for spitting the toy out. Always remember that your reward needs to be greater than her reward she is getting by not listening.

My cocker spaniel mix just isn't interested in playing fetch and WILL not do it, he very much enjoys playing tag with me and other dogs, such is life. I've never seen a border collie not want to play actual fetch, but all dogs are different. And yes, some dogs ';just won't learn something.'; Could I ever teach my yorkie to herd cattle? Definitely not, even if she was bigger. I tried to teach my cocker to catch a frisbee in mid-air and he never would do it, not even once. My dogs just aren't interested in running after a ball and bringing it back........they would rather have other dogs chase them or sit and chew on the ball. That is their personality.How Do You Get Your Dog To Play Fetch??????
There are several ways to get a dog to fetch, but my favorite way is to jump around and try and get the dog in a hyper state. Then I start running around with the dog and taunting him with a toy (tennis ball, stick) then you throw it. The only way to keep the dog from keeping the toy away from you is to either have a treat or pretend to have a treat hidden in your hand. You can then bribe them to come in close and when she gets close enough you quickly reach out an get the toy. Sometimes they will let go on their own. Then you can just throw it again and if you have real treats, you can get them to play longer than witout treats.
I don't believe that some dogs just ';won't'; learn something, they just need to be taught in the right way. Teaching your dog the command come is huge for teaching fetch, but here's an even easier way. Get a long leash, in some places they are called trainning leashes. Put your dog on the leash and throw the frisbee a short distance. Tell him to get the frisbee, when he gets it praise him and tell him to bring it here. If he resists you have him on leash so you can reel him in. Regardless of if he resists or not praise him like crazy every time you get him to come back and get the frisbee. Practice practice and praise accordingly, then try off leash. Never run after him if he runs away from you with the frisbee thats a game to him so if you chase him you are rewarding him. Border collies love to please their ppl, I bet you have this down in a week. Good Luck
have his fav treat in your hand , throw the ball and ask him to fetch,everytime he fetches give him his treat and encourage.

If he keeps running and u run after him he will consider it as play. Ignore him when he doesnt obey, let him know u are the alpha
we started trying with our pup, she usually went after what we thru, but kinda ran towards us but to the side and would just drop the toy and lay down. then we would go and pick it up and throw it again, then we started standing on either side of the yard and would throw something back and forth between us until she just wanted it very badly, then she was more likely to come closer with the toy. then last weekend something must of clicked in her head. we were at the dog park but there werent many dogs she was interested in playing with and she was hanging around us, so we just picked up a ball and threw it, usually she would have chased it and then took off running in the completely opposit direction but she actually went and got it. and then brought it back. we were shocked so we jokingly told her to drop it and she did. and she did it over and over and over! so then i found a frisbee and threw that, at home she has one of those soft nylon cloth ones, but this was a hard plastic one. well, i threw it so that it rolled on its side and she chased it, and when it finally fell it fell so that she couldnt get a grip on it, so she kept digging on it until she knocked it on her back foot and it popped up and she grabbed it. you could tell she was just so proud of herself that she pranced over to us with it. we kept throwing it for her and she just had a blast. we havent done it since, but if its not too cold, we'll go again this weekend. its just something you need to keep at over and over. she has never been a dog to learn things for treats, just praise. we found that its helpful to learn in the house, we always throw her toys across the room because she likes to chew them on us or have us hold them while she chews, so she usually brings them back so she can chew them on us again.

some dogs just wont do it and never will. my springer spaniel wouldnt ever chase after anything more than once or twice. she was also like ';well, you threw it, its gone now';
Believe it or not, I have a young Lab that won't fetch either. She's just not interested. I tried the treat idea, but she would rather chase my other dog while HE fetches the tennis ball or stick or whatever.

Some dogs just aren't interested...
have a soft treat reward and practice without the frisbee calling her to you.. then when she has the hang of this.. add the frisbee but only throw it a short distance (3-4 feet) then call her to you .. and trade the food for the frisbee...

NEVER try to catch her to get the frisbee back.. if she runs off with it.. game is over..

Border Collies are smart... she is making the game of tag rather than playing fetch... so you must teach her the new game and NOT play tag
