How to teach your dog to ';speak';?

My puppy is not a big barker, he will only bark at the cats when he is trying to play with them. I dont want to praise him when he does that b/c I'm afraid he will associate ';Speak'; with chasing or playing with the cats...lol



He wont bark otherwise...

Take him out to play, keep some treats handy, if he has a favorite toy use it keep him worked up throw the toy, let him win, then get the toy, repeat over and over, continually holding the toy for longer periods of time, soon your dog will get so excited that he will bark, when this happens start to use the word speak, after you say speak and he barks give him a treat or his reward, he will quickly pair the two together and do it on command, but remember he knows that he is suppose to get a treat for it, always give the treat after you ask him to do it.How to teach your dog to ';speak';?
well u could sit down next to him and bark yourself, encouraging him to bark and when he does say ';good boy'; and pet him or give him a treat. u will look like a total douche barking all day but it is likely to pay off :)
lol @ Marcelo - I thought I was the only one who barked at my dog to get him to speak on command.
We taught our GSD to Speak. (Now he barks at everything. So, make sure you also teach him a ';Quiet'; command.)





Well, we were in a class when we taught him. Our trainer had her imported GSD speak and he would get treats every time. Maverick would sit there and watch, and then after while, would bark too. That's how we taught him.





Get a clicker. It'll be your best friend. WHENEVER he barks, click and treat. If he has never seen a clicker before, buy one at Petsmart or Petco. And click and treat, click and treat. So then he'll know the clicker is a good thing.



No matter when he barks, click and treat. Associate a hand signal and a word. You would say, ';Speak.'; and..touch your lips or something.



Ours is, ';Maverick..Tell me what you want.'; And we touch our chin.





Biggest thing: Click WHENEVER he barks. Lots of praise as well!
First show him ''speak'' bark at him. Then play tug-o-war with him till he starts growling and bark at him while you tell him to ''speak''. This will take time and remember the treats.
don't do it i taught my boxer to do it know he doesn't know how to shut up don't train your puppy to open doors either that was a big mistake
