How do you teach your dog to give you the ball/toy from its mouth? HELP!?

My dog, Halrey, will not give you the ball after you throw it to him! I am trying to teach but it is not working! I love, and so does he, playing fetch with him but after waiting for him to finally drop i am done! Please HELP! thanksHow do you teach your dog to give you the ball/toy from its mouth? HELP!?
Go to the website www.dogscouts.com

click on learn new things.

Then fun training.

Then reliable retreive.

Basically, you are teaching the retreive backwards..teaching the dog how great it is to bring it back to your hand.

I not only refer people to this link..I give handouts of it in my flyball triaining class. How do you teach your dog to give you the ball/toy from its mouth? HELP!?
Come up with a command word such you would like to use such as ';release';. You can also combine that with a clicker. Offer something that goes in the mouth instead of the ball such as a treat. My Aussie was a real pig about releasing the ball, stick, sock, whatever he had. The treats did the trick because he had to drop what was in his mouth to eat. Sneaky but it works. Remember use the command at the same time.
Two things come to mind.

You can play with two balls and teach him that once he drops the ball in his mouth you will throw the other one.. ';fair exchange';.

OR

You can have a ball on a string.. as he brings it back to you you can catch him by the string and have him sit in front of you. Then give your ';OUT'; command and have both hands on either side of the ball when you say this.. If he does not ';out';.. then just sneak your finger in behind the ball and tickle his tongue.

GOOD LUCK

Both should work for you

Don't try to pull the ball away from him- that can seem like a game and he'll try even harder to keep it. Act like you're not interested in it, then when he drops it (he can't hold it forever!), say, GOOD DOG! and throw it again for him.

At first it may seem ridiculous because he is holding it forever, but just act bored until he drops it, THEN get excited and renew the game.

This process can go even faster if you give him a piece of food and say GOOD DOG! every time he drops it. Just don't try to take it from him. If he is carrying it act like you don't want it.
Simple... dog has the ball, human wants the ball.... human trades a treat for the ball while saying DROP! and holding the ball while dangling the treat where dog can smell it, dog drops ball to eat treat, human praises dog, then dog learns the command ';drop'; through repetition, and eventually no treats are needed.
My dog learned from her bedroom, aslo telling and showing the dog who's master will make that dog obey you. First you need to get the dog a crate and make the dog learn that that's the crate and when he/she is in trouble they need to go in it (Or when you're away) When the dog doesn't drop the ball say ' Go to your room! ' And then the dog will learn to drop the ball, or you can take your dog to puppy school

Good luck

okay been there done that with my Lab Ellie

I refuse to play grab and tug with her so I wait for her to drop it as I hold up a treat and she decides (always the treat) after a few times,,shes will get the idea !!

what we did withour dog is whenshe would being it to us she wouldnt want to take it out of her mouth either and we would try and get it out and say out ...... out over and over and soon enough after a while she would bring them and we would say out and she would drop it in our hands. good luck
Hold the ball but don't pull. Say to your dog ';Release';. When the dog releases the ball, give him a lot of praise.
