We recently adopted a 3 month old puppy from the pound that looks exactly like our 1-1/2 year old lab/staffordshire mix. Our dog Abby is very hyper and playful and she is really interested in playing with the new puppy but the puppy does nothing but bite her. I don't think its hurting her too much, because we have the puppy in a pen in the backyard that our dog can easily jump in and out of, and she stays in there and lets the puppy bite her. Sometimes she tries to make the puppy submit and pins her down on her back but the puppy just keeps on fighting. Abby now hows little scratch marks and bumps all over that you can see through her very short hair and it seems like the puppy is being aggressive, not playing. She also bites at us when she is playing but its much easier to teach her not to bite me. How do I nip this in the but before she gets any bigger? I want her to be able to play happily with other dogs like Abby. Thanks for your help! How do I teach my new puppy to play with our other dog? She's extremely rough!?
Don't worry about this. Your dog Abby will train your puppy for you.
When your puppy gets too rough, Abby will stop her by growling, lunging or nipping. Your puppy will understand Abby better than she will understand you.
Just like with humans, adult dogs are very patient and tolerant of little puppies antics, but they will only let it go so far.
Do not worry about this, and let your dog Abby discipline your puppy the dog way.How do I teach my new puppy to play with our other dog? She's extremely rough!?
I think this is something Abby is gonna have to do on her own. When she gets fed up she will lay down the law. Believe me.
Tell the puppy ';NO'; when its starts to bit hard and maybe make it sit down next to you for a while.
I would let the dogs figure it out for themselves. If Abby really hated it she would let the puppy know and let you know. As the puppy gets bigger it will also calm down some which might help.
