Okay I play fetch with my dogs and she won't give me the ball when she brings it back but she really wants me to throw it for her. Any tips on how to get the ball out of her mouth??
Thanks!! XXXXXXXXHow do you get your dogs to drop the ball?
Lol
Yeah, dogs get excited and forget to drop the ball so you can throw it again.
Easy to resolve.... just bring along a treat (food) and when she brings the ball back she has a choice (either hang onto the ball and lose the food or drop the ball and get a treat) unless she is a totally unique dog she will drop the ball and eat.
Do this a few times and she will get the idea and you can stop giving her food.
That should help if not resolve the issue! How do you get your dogs to drop the ball?
helps to have another ball ready in your hand, when she sees that, she will be more willing to give up the first ball, Say GIVE when you take the ball from her.
Have another to throw.
Show her the 2nd ball and make it exciting. When she drops the ball in her mouth step on it and throw the 2nd.
The step on it thing is so she doesn't pick it back up and then have both balls.
lol my friends dog always does that
she usually just throws another ball and the dog will drop the one she has and go after the other one then pick up the other one and when she comes back just do the same over and over again
hope this helped
have something in your other hand, a treat, another toy, then your dog will automatically drop the fetched ball for that, then slowly but surely dog will cotton on.
Happy playing.
Say it like you mean it. Or have a piece of dry dog food ready and trade it for the ball until she gets the idea.
You can have another ball in your hand.
And, once she drops the ball, give her a treat, say, ';Good girl.';, pet her,
And when she doesn't give you the ball let her know you want it.
You can also use commands like, Give, or just tell her, ';Drop it';.
After you let her know that you WANT the ball and she has to drop it in order for you to throw it again, she'll cath your drift.
Don't teach your dog to fetch, it's called obsessive behavior. Why not get involved in something like agility or obedience?
lol my dog does that too...it is part of the game for him to not give the ball back! but after a treat or two he will give it back and run after it before it has even been thrown again.
Your dog just may not be submissive. A submissive dog will always obey to master. Point at the floor, and firmly say 'Drop' until she drops it.
Eventually she should learn there's no point in just waiting for it, and will just drop as soon as she reaches you!
Good luck!
I offered my dog a choc drop when he brought the ball back- he had to drop the ball to eat the treat- and now he just drops the toy at my feet when we play fetch
Teach the word ';drop'; or ';give'; by holding a toy (not during your game of fetch) in one hand and food in another. Give the dog the toy, show her the treat and say ';drop.'; After she drops it praise her and give her the treat. You can also do this with two of her favorite toys by just switching them back and forth (give her one, tempt her to drop it (and say ';drop';) and give her the other.
Once she knows the command, use two balls while playing fetch. ';Drop'; is great for the dog to know and always praise her after she does it to make her surrender worthwhile.
Slowly fase out the second ball so she doesn't become dependant on it and soon she will learn that right after she drops it you throw it again! NEVER hoard the ball after she drops it...throw it RIGHT afterward as her reward.
