my dog listens when i call but im so scared to take him to the lake with family because everyone Else's dogs are off leash and i keep him on his so he doesn't have the chance to run away because i don't trust him even though he comes when called. i feel bad that everyone Else's dog is running around in the water and playing and he has to stay with me. he is only 5 months second youngest of the ones we take to the lake. also he is lab, australian cattle dog, and maybe Rhodesian ridgeback if this helps any. So is their any advice for me.How to train your dog to behave off leash at lake?
Start in your yard or a small familiar place, and start the ';check in'; training. Let your dog loose and then tell him to come, when he comes give him a treat and say ';check';. Or ';check in,'; dogs usually respond better to one word commands. Never disappoint him by not having a treat. Make the periods of time longer every time you call him back, but get a time that you want him to check in with you. This trains your dog to check in with you every so often. Like every five to ten minutes, this gets your dog coming to check in with you and also keeps him close. Later you can add distractions to make sure he is ready to listen in new distracting places. You may get someone to call him away from you or put him with one other dog for a distraction. (Any place you go you will need to have treats and remember that if you use treats that your dog likes but does not ever get or seldom gets then he may respond better.)How to train your dog to behave off leash at lake?
Teach him to be off the leash at home.
Since he's still pretty young, it might not work.
And you are the only smart owner there. Keep him on the leash. Or build a fence there and he can run around in the fenced area. There may be leash laws, so best just to keep him confined somehow.
I would recommend some obedience classes before you ever considering taking him off leash in a non-confined area. A 5 month old lab mix(or any puppy for that matter) can NOT be trusted. I should also point out that even though he may come when you call him at home or another familiar place, you can not trust that he would do that in another surrounding. If the lake area is well confined(fenced or otherwise) then you may be able to try it safely. Better safe then sorry!
I kind of know how you feel. I've taken my dogs to the dog beach in Huntington several times and I was a little hesitant to take them off leash. One of my dogs can be a little reactive to others and I didn't want anything bad to happen. But I knew she knew her recall very well and took the plunge and let her off. She had a blast and came every time I called. It was fun to watch her have so much fun in the sand and water.
If you are so confident in your dogs recall, why are you so afraid to let him off? If it really have no intentions of every letting him run around at the lake where there are other dogs running off leash, I would stop taking him. It can actually be kinda of stressful for him to see all those other dogs running free and he's got a tether.
If you do actually want him to run around and he has a good recall, take a chance and let him go. Keep his favorite treats on you and don't let him get to far away from you. If he messes up and ignores you, lure him back with the treats or a toy (which he prefers) and leash him again. You may be a surprised with him. He'll have fun and so will you.
I once had a puppy of the same kind of breed and I took him to the Grand Lake 2 years ago and he's been missing ever since! Goliath! please come back to me!
He is too young to be trusted off leash. It is gonna be hard to keep him from wanting to go play at this age.
Get a round pen %26amp; let him loose in a round pen. You can build your own or buy sections to make is as big or little as you want or need it to be.
