We got our dog (half collie half blue heeler) a Kong at Petsmart on Saturday. We filled it with treats, and squirted a meat flavored paste on it and inside the dental ridges of the toy. It is a ball shape one with straight sides so it will roll funny. We let him see us put treats in it and he saw us squirt the paste on the outside. All he will do is lick it and when it rolls over he just stops. It sais on the package guaranteed your dog will love it. It is not too big for him by the way. We asked the clerk and she said it would be the perfect size. and the dog was right there for her to see him. He is a 1 year old so we thought for sure he would enjoy playing with it. He loves tennis balls but wont even try to bite this Kong. He will only lick it untill it rolls away then gives up. Help me with ideas please. I am also sure that he likes the paste and treats that are inside. We tested them alone on him first. How do you get your dog to play with his ';Kong';?
Some dogs just don't like them. Freezing is a good idea, so is peanut butter. If your dog will retrieve, try playing with him for a little bit. The kong is heavier and harder than a tennis ball, so it will take some time for him to get use to it.How do you get your dog to play with his ';Kong';?
You should definetly put some of his favorites inside of the KONG At first-do not freeze it because it will be 2 hard for him. Put some treats in it- that will fall out easily-- so he can get the idea.. THen.. slowly make it harder by freezing- or by less treats.. Etc.
If this does not work- as I see- you have tried the treats-- Maybe he doesnt like it.. He doesnt have to like everything
When we give our dog his Kong we put peanut butter in it. Our dog loves it, so i would try that and see if it works. As for the playing aspect. My dog will lick the PB out and push it around for a little while, but he enjoys his tennis balls more.
Put something in the Kong that makes noise when it moves like a big ball of tin foil. You can also spray or dip the ball in something yummy like the knew sauces they dog food company's make. Not all dogs like them and they are refundable. It's not the same as a ball it wont squish in there mouths like some dogs like.
I would try playing keep away with it. Or putting peanut butter or cheese whiz in it, instead of paste, and freeze it over night. Dogs seem to love cold toys. .-Good luck
