Say you bring home a puppy. You provide food, comfort, a roof over its head, lots of cuddles, toys etc... The dog learns your smell...will cry when you leave the room...enjoys chewing toys at your feet. However, this is not really yet a master-dog life-long bond.
It's one thing to hold your dog's attention captive in the quiet of your living room, with a treat in your hand. However, as soon as I take my dog out, with all the competing distractions, I might as well not exist. I'm 100% sure that if I were to unleash him in some busy public place, he would happily disappear and never come back.
Now, I've only had him for a month or so, so that's not surprising perhaps...and he is still a puppy who is curious about the wide world out there. However, I was just wondering about the experience of others on how long it takes before such a strong bond develops.
As I said, this is rather subjective so I will propose a litmus test. Say if a friend came to your place and played with your dog, fed it treats, gave it cuddles, and then took the dog home, if the dog is happy to make the easy transition to his new family it means you had not developed a strong bond with this dog.How long does it take to bond with your dog?
I think it takes months to develop a bond. In general about 6 months. But some dogs bond very quickly. I adopted my 2 year old Bichon Frise and after only 2 weeks, he did not want to go back to his old owner. (I brought him to visit for a little while after I got him)
So every dog is different. My friend adopted a 6 month old and it took her 2 months to bond, another friend adopted a 4 year old and it took him about 4 months to bond.
I guess it depends on the age and the type of dog.How long does it take to bond with your dog?
Thanks! That's my boy! LOL. Yes they are sooo ridiculously cute!

When we got our dog (who's a beagle/foxhound) once he figured out who fed him all the time that's the person he bonded with. I'd say it's different for every dog's personality. I'm sure your puppy loves you he's just young. He's got a lot of curiosity and learning to do.
HEYYYYY DUDE DOGS CANT EXPRESS THEIR FEELING AS V DO............... OUR DOGS LOVES US MUCH MORE THAN V LOVE THEM.............. IF U UNLEASH UR DOG IN SOME BUSY AREA INITIALLY HE WILL RUN HERE N THERE BUT LATER ON HE WILL COME SEARCHING FOR U...... DOGS LOVE TO MEET NEW PEOPLE IF HE GOES WID SOMEONE.. HE WNT B ABLE TO STAY WITH THEM FOR MORE THAN A DAY OR TWO..... JUZ GIVE SUFFICIENT TIME TO UR DOG TO MAKE UR BOND STRONGER.....
Some breeds are known to be ';one owner dogs';
My breed just so happens to be one of those breeds %26amp; although the Chihuahua is known to have a bad rep. mine are very friendly %26amp; well-behaved, but they know who their owner %26amp; pack leader is, they wouldn't leave my side in a public place or run off from me for nothing. This is due to training on my part, being the pack leader, %26amp; because my breed usually forms a very strong bond with only one person.
As far as my end is concerned...it takes time before I bond with them, usually once they are past the puppy stage %26amp; fully trained, I can take time to bond as their owner %26amp; slack off a little with training which gives me personally, more bonding time instead of being in training mode.
