my 5 month old gsd is playful but whenever i play with her it's always keep away. i need something to break out of that routine and she knows the 4 basic commands and shake hands in case that helps with play. i also need to stop playing keep away because i can't teach her fetch. she knows exactly what to do but she always turns fetch training into keep away how do i make her stop playing keep away when it's unnecessary? if it helps i'm beta in the house and my dad is alpha then it's my dog. and is she acting more rambunctious now because of her age? my dad says since she's close to being a teenager so she's acting so bad is this true? and my dad says she'll stop jumping on people when she gets older but i don't believe this so how do you make them stop jumping on people? and how do i get her to stop chasing cars and trying to go towards other dogs when she sees them to play?How do you teach your dog not to play keep away when it's unnecessary and i need a new way to play with her?
Let's break this down into a few groups...okay firstly, teaching the dog to bring the toy to you. First off the dog should be on a line (you can tie it around your waist so your hands are free)...you give it a quick tug with the toy, then release the toy. let get walk around with it for a couple of seconds, then say come, if she doesn't come, reel her in. When she gets to you, put your hand back on the tug and say ';Yes!'; and play a quick game of tug again. By doing that you're teaching her having the toy is okay, but not as fun as you tugging back! The goal is to teach the dog that YOU'RE the source of fun, not the toy, the toy without you tugging back = boring. Eventually when you release the toy? She'll run right back to you and push the toy into you. When I release a tug toy, I hold my hand out palm up, and my dogs run to put it in my hand so I can restart the tug game!
Training the fetch (retrieve)....if she'll go out and pick up the item you tossed, she knows how to fetch. The problem is is that you haven't taught her ';Come';. If she runs out, and picks up the toy...and comes when called, TADA, she just fetched!!! So your issue isn't a retrieving issue, it's an issue with her not coming back to you. Again you can take a long line, throw the item, when she picks it up, say ';Come';, if she doesn't come? Reel her back in, then when she gets to you, ';Yes'; and a quick game of tug....see how we make bringing the toy to you the ';good'; part?
As far as jumping on people, I keep ALL my puppies and new dogs on a leash and collar at ALL times when they're loose in the house, if you do this, when she jumps, you say ';No';, grab the leash or collar and jerk it....this is called a correction. She'll learn every time she jumps you say ';No'; and correct her, so to avoid the correction, she'll stop jumping. Also you'll be teaching her that ';No'; means to ';Stop whatever you're doing';....No is the most powerful word in all of dog training, it can save your dog's life.
Lastly buy a prong collar....don't be a bone head...learn how to use it. You NEVER slip it on or off over their head, you have to take it apart to put it on/off. When the dog pulls, it will correct itself, thus solving the problem of pulling. If the dog keeps acting aggressive towards dogs, pop the leash a little to issue a correction, if the dog doesn't stop, pop the leash a little harder until you find what level of correction she needs. DON'T GO ALL RAMBO AND JERK THE LEAD HARD....if you correct her too hard you're on the way to RUINING your dog for life.
http://leerburg.com/fit-prong.htmHow do you teach your dog not to play keep away when it's unnecessary and i need a new way to play with her?
Some dogs never learn fetch. My first two didn't. They never got the hang of it.
';and my dad says she'll stop jumping on people when she gets older but i don't believe this so how do you make them stop jumping on people';
You teach her the commands of ';down'; and ';sit';.
';and how do i get her to stop chasing cars';
Dogs shouldn't be running free, so either make sure she's in a fence, on a chain, or leash.
';trying to go towards other dogs when she sees them to play?';
Let her play with other dogs.
try agility or fly ball you can look for a club to join near where you live,there will be one on the internet,then you can play and train at the same time
If your dog really knew ';exactly what to do'; she would do it. So please don't assume she knows what you want. She thinks you want to play so that is what she is doing.
She will never stop jumping on people unless she is taught not to do so.
You must never give her any opportunity to chase cars, ever! She will get killed if she chases cars, or cause accidents after which you will have to pay for all of the damages to people's cars as well as all of their medical expenses. Think: massive major lawsuits.
Dogs do tend to be a bit more ';wild'; in their early puppyhoods and teens (still puppies) but can still learn a huge number of things in spite of it.
It takes time and what is called ';proof training'; or ';proofing'; to teach a dog to ignore other dogs.
You need a new way to teach your dog, if you want her to fetch and to do well in proofing. Please go to http://www.clickertraining.com Watch some or all of the free videos there. Learn about clicker training. It is really easy and you'll *never* have to worry about who is ';alpha'; and who isn't. Your dog will *LOVE* learning this way and will learn more and much faster, too.
You've made a good start. Now make it even better. Use clicker training.
just stop playing keepaway with her and she will eventually stop
