I have a mixed puppy that i have had since she was 2 months. She is 9 months old and she has many chew toys, i tried giving her a different one every week so she doesnt get bored of just one. Then i tried letting her have all of them at once. But either way, she still likes to mouth on me and my family. She's chewing on one of her toys and then all of a sudden she comes up and wants to start to bite on you. She doesnt bite hard or do it to hurt you, she wants to play but it still sorta hurts because she is a big 9 month old puppy (52 lbs) (mixed with large breeds). I just want to know how do you teach them to stop doing that, because i give her toys and i play with her and walk her but all she ends up doing is mouthing. I tried not playing with her to punish her and tieing her up for 10 mins as a sort of ';time out';. Does someone have any idea how to teach my puppy to stop doing this? How do u get your dog/puppy to stop mouthing (play biting)?
Tying her up will make her worse. That's what the morons who want savage dogs do, they keep their dogs chained up. However you don't sound like that at all.
Keep a toy in your pocket and when pup comes up to mouth you, stuff the toy in her mouth and praise her for taking it. My pup was a land shark with the mouthing and I would often turn my back on her and leave the room, closing the door behind me so she couldn't follow. Mostly I used the toy distraction. How do u get your dog/puppy to stop mouthing (play biting)?
eat the pancakes
yell ouch as loud as you can. she'll take it as a yelp like another dog would do if she hurt it.
Anytime she mouths or bites you, squeal ';Ow'; turn from her, and stop playing with her.
She will quickly learn that you are not going to tolerate the biting.
My puppy does this for attention. Try ignoring her when she does this. I usually say ';STOP';, cross my arms so she cant nip my hands, and turn away. This works quite well for my dog. Don't make a big fuss when she bites. Give her a chew toy instead of your hand/clothing/furniture/whatever.
She doesn't understand the time outs. When she mouths you take her lip and pinch it against her teeth and tell her no bite. Do that every time and she'll learn to stop the behavior. It should smart a little but that's how she'll learn it's not fun.
I agree with most of the previous answers - when she bites, squeal and turn away so that she understands that its hurting you or that you don't like it. Also, make sure that you leave a decent amount of space between the time you let her know that biting you is bad and when you start playing or praising her again.
The puppy just thinks it's playing. If it starts to mouth you, yelp like one of it's litter mates would and turn away. Don't move and don't look at it. The yelping will make it think you're injured and will learn not to play rough.
Your pup is doing that because she wants to play with you like she would a sibling with her mouth!
I suggest that when she is starting to mouth play on your hands, Fold your arms and turn your back to your dog. Eventuality a few times of this method she will start to understand that when she mouths on your hands you wont play with her and that is really not fun! When she stops after you have turned around you can praise her for being a good girl.
Dogs use body language a lot more then they can understand words, especially a puppy!
