Is it okay to play tag with your dog, or does it teach them bad behavior? What about playing with it too much or walking it too much? When I get a dog I want to play/swim/walk with it outside all day for hours, but wonder if this is smart or not. I already know not to play wrestling or tug a war - wouldn't want to anyways. Thanks for any answers. By the way, we are getting a very active dog breed. How much exercise/playing is too much for a dog?
If you are getting a large breed puppy, you need to take it steady to begin with. It's the same with any size dog really, but especially with the big breeds (large mutts?). Over-exercising can put too much strain on immature bones and lack of muscle tone so it's far better to wait until they are around a year before exercising them to the point of tiring them out totally. And don't forget, a dog will keep going long after it's worn out. Take the advice of the breeder you buy your puppy from - he/she should give you a list of dos and don'ts so don't be tempted to do too much too early.
You will find a puppy has burst of crazy energy, and will then sleep - quite a lot during a day to start with. How much exercise/playing is too much for a dog?
getting an active dog usually means there is very little chance of you overexercising the dog. trust me, it will wear you out before you wear it out. it is a good thing that you're willing to devote that much time to your dog. good luck!
Everytnhing is good in moderation..if you take him for walks/swims..think about if you are tired and need a drink..then he probably would too..throw the ball around etc...I heard that it is not good to run with a puppy/dog in it's first year..not good for the joints..don't worry about it too much and just have fun with him..good luck
Is that even possible???
