Micro-chipping your dog?

We just moved into a house with a fenced in yard and I want to get my 10 month old small dog micro-chipped. She loves to play outside but I want to take every precaution I can. Can anyone tell me...

-Where do you go to have a micro-chip implanted? Does the vet do it?

-About how much does it cost? What's the best/most commonly used kind?

-Anyone have any success stories?

Thank you!Micro-chipping your dog?
There are two major manufacturers of microchips. One of the most popular is the AVID (American Veterinary Identification Devices) microchip. When you get an AVID microchip implanted in your dog, you will register with PETrac. Your veterinarian will have the application information to send in to PETrac. Your dog will also receive a tag for his collar with his AVID microchip number prominently displayed. When your lost pet is found, they will be scanned and the information will be called in to PETrac. Their database will bring up your information and you will be notified immediately.

Another popular brand of microchip is the Schering-Plough HomeAgain microchip. Once your pet is microchipped with the Schering-Plough HomeAgain microchip, you will register with the American Kennel Club (AKC) Companion Animal Recovery (CAR) program. This program maintains a national database and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

More than 1 陆 million pets are enrolled in the AKC Companion Animal Recovery program and 97% have HomeAgain microchips. 126,034 lost pets have been reunited with their owners thanks to this program which has a 100% success rate. Every found pet in its system has been identified.

Cost will depend on where you get your pet microchipped. A lot of animal shelters include microchip packages for any pets adopted from their shelter. The cost of the microchip is included in the price of the animal. Animal shelters usually offer low-cost microchipping for pets. The price varies, but it is generally between $20 and $30. Depending on your location, a local vet can cost anywhere between 15$ to 50$.Micro-chipping your dog?
most vets do it for anywhere from$50-100 depending on where you live.home again by akc is the best and it does work as long as your local pound and vets scan missing dogs.
You need to have your vet insert the microchip. It is injected under the shoulder blade through a normal sized needle.

I know it's not too spendy, but not sure exactly how much it would cost. Depends on the vet too.

I have heard of several success stories, but have no personal ones.

Here's one :)

The vet does it, it doesn't cost much, and HomeAgain has some success stories on their site:

Usually your vet will implant the chip. The price will vary depending on your veterinarian, but I got our pets done for a very reasonable price while they were already going in to get spayed/neutered anyway. It is very quick and painless, not even any stitches to have removed later. I know that I have heard success stories. Sometimes lost pets are found because of a microchip and I even heard one story where someone lost a very valuable pedigree dog and several people were claiming to be the owners, since the owner had the dog micro-chipped, he was able to prove he was the rightful owner. I think they are a great idea as dog tags can fall off or get lost, plus if you dog is stolen they most likely will never know until they take your pet in to the vet or something and then they will have to explain how they obtained someone else's pet. In my opinion, they are a great idea.
The vet will do it, or a lot of times your local shelter will as well.

It will cost anywhere from $20-$60 or so.

There's a lot of different sorts, Avid and HomeAgain are probably the two most common.
In the UK a vet will do it for around 拢10/30.

The local council will also arrange for you to get it done.

They inject it into the scruff of the neck (it's painless).

There are two types of chip one transmits a signal %26amp; the other type is transmitted %26amp; heat detected.
the vet can do it.. call around and see which vet offers it.. You will want either a home again or avid chip.. dont use the chip offered at banfield vets. Some shelters and rescues may offer microchipping too.

Average price is around $35-80
I have all three of mine spayed or neutered, current on their shots %26amp; all three are chipped.

I have a dog proof yard or fence but one never knows when someone will open a gate or a dog will run out the door.

Last summer I found a small Dalmatian X %26amp; tried to find her owners but could not cause she was not chipped. She had already been spayed so someone lost a dog %26amp; I could not find her owners. So now she is mine %26amp; all fixed up with everything she needs.

I don't know how much a Vet charges to chip a dog but I paid $20 at the Animal Humane Society cause I am on a limited income. I got an adult male neutered, brought 2 up current on their shots %26amp; got all two chipped for $73.
I took my dog to a petco they give shots every sunday from 10-12. They had a special going on for $30 puppy shots and $20 Micro chip so a total of $50.00 for the package. The lady said they are regularly 50.00 for the chip so, I got a pretty good deal. My sis takes her dogs to the vet for every thing, she payed 150.00 for her chip. Check your local pet stores to see if or when the the shot and chip people will be there before you go to the vet.
Most vets can do it. Just ask the next time you take her in to the vet. Also many shelters have clinic days when they fix dog, and they often provide other services on the cheap. Honestly I can't say what it cost as my dogs were all chipped for free right before we left the shelter. It's nice as all shelters, and animal control groups scan strays. Most vets I know don''t have/use scanners.
The vet does it.

Price depends on what your vet charges.....ours was $30

We have the AKC CAR. I felt they were a good choice.

I hope I never have to have a success story.

Hopefully you understand that it is just a form of ID should your dog get lost or stolen. Some people have the misconception that it is a GPS tracking system that will find your dog. It is not.

It's a good thing to do....along with a with an ID tag on his collar.
